As a kid, my favorite hobby was reading and creative writing. While other kids were off playing with toys, I found myself engrossed in a book or busy putting together a poem. However, by the time I got to the 9th grade in high school, reading and writing had become less fun because I was being funneled in that direction by my teachers.
Common sense at the time was that individuals who focused on the Arts and Humanities were not compensated as well as their peers in the social sciences. I didn’t want to commit to a life path that wouldn’t compensate me well. Because of this belief, even though I did great at writing, I always found a way to put up resistance to learning and mastering the art of writing whenever anyone would encourage me in that direction.
Over the past 18 months, I’ve been on the path of self-discovery and working on personal development. On this journey, I have been taking the time to really get back in tune with the things that I truly enjoy, and writing is one of them. I was introduced to Léandre and Stellar Writing through another writer who I hired to complete a feature story about me. When I got the chance to review the story, the angle didn’t quite resonate with me. It was then that I realized how important it is to be the one who actually writes your own story.
I have always dreamed of writing a book, but it felt like such an intimidating process. I have an undergraduate degree in Literatures in English and an MBA, and yet I felt so scared to write anything the public would consume. I had created so much resistance to a natural talent that once came so naturally for me. I knew that it was time to begin working on that muscle that seemed to be suffering from atrophy.
Since I started getting coached by Léandre at Stellar Writing, I’ve made several discoveries about my writing abilities. Before, my fears and generalized anxiety held my writing capabilities hostage. I had always felt like my thoughts were incoherent and jumbled, and no one would be interested in what I write. That is no longer the case.
Each time I go through a new part of Stellar Writing’s training, I find myself going back over the videos 3-4 times. Each time I’ll come up with a new writing activity in an effort to duplicate what I’ve learned and try to improve as I go. I’ve been slowly uniting those knots of resistance that I’ve created over the years with regards to writing, and it’s been a wonderful experience.
Anyone who is familiar with my prior writing can probably now sense a lot of brevity in the work I produce, which is a huge confidence booster in and of itself. I am now at the point where I’ve started taking on paid writing gigs from clients so that I can continue growing my skills while I help them to tell their stories.
I've learned that we are all writers, most of us just don’t know it. Yet, like a painter with a fresh canvas, it can become daunting trying to figure out where to make the first stroke. But, once you understand the rules, the possibilities are endless on what you can create.
Léandre takes complex concepts and presents them in such a way that anyone can understand them. He’s managed to quickly teach me everything that I wish my teachers in high school and college could have in an easy, digestible format. Some of the topics include how to properly craft the narrative, think conceptually, and master the trivium to produce memorable and impactful work.
